WORK NOTE
Mappila culture connected to both Sufi traditions and Gulf influences. Here, I discuss how Gulf culture has influenced traditional Mappila women's attire, leading to a shift from richly decorated clothing(pulli thattam, pulli thuni) to minimalist pardhas.
The black pardha, in particular, diminishes individual visual attraction, whereas traditional Mappila women's dresses were vibrant and visually striking. This work explores the contradiction between these two styles, analyzing how this cultural shift impacts identity, aesthetics, and visual attraction.
